RTE in UP : 'UP schools openly flouting RTE norms'

LUCKNOW: Expressing concern over non-implementation of mandatory provision of 25% reservation for disadvantaged children under the Right to Education Act (RTE), a representative body working for this Act met Governor BL Joshi on Monday. The delegation was led by former MP and social activist Subhashini Ali.

The representatives submitted a memorandum on disadvantaged children being unable to exercise the right of free education in private, aided and unaided minority schools as stated under the Right to Free and Compulsory Education. This provision is to be applicable from academic session 2013-14.

The members also apprised the governor that schools in the state are openly flouting the RTE norms despite the Supreme Court ruling that all private schools will have to reserve 25% seats for disadvantaged children. They also informed the governor that no official order in this regard has been circulated to the schools till now.

The members said governor assured them that he will take up the matter with the state government.
